Emiliano Raúl Sala Taffarel an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a forward for Welsh side Cardiff City is feared dead. French authorities have confirmed that new Cardiff City player Emiliano Sala was on board the plane, which disappeared over the English Channel on Monday night.

ITV News has spoken to French journalist Arnaud Wajdzik in Nantes. He has confirmed that the French police and Nantes Football Club have said that Sala was on the plane.

A desperate search is underway for a plane, which disappeared over the English Channel amid fears that Cardiff City player Emiliano Sala was on board. 

Rescue teams were scrambled to waters north of Alderney after the light aircraft vanished on Monday evening, Guernsey Police said.

The Piper Malibu, with two people on board, lost contact around eight miles north-west of Alderney at 8.30pm, the BBC reported.

According to French news website Le Parisien, the Argentinian footballer was on board while being transferred from Nantes to Cardiff City.

A search and rescue operation is currently underway off the north of Alderney after a light aircraft disappeared from radar several hours ago,” police said on Wednesday morning.
