Osimhen-less Galatasaray crumble miserably at Frankfurt

Hosts Eintracht Frankfurt scored four times in 29 minutes to bounce back from a goal down and hammer Galatasaray 5-1 in their Champions League opener on Thursday.
The Turkish sides are without their talismanic striker, Victor Osimhen who was injured while on international duty with Nigeria.
The Turks had hit Frankfurt on the break with Yunus Akgun completing the move from a Leroy Sane assist in the eighth minute. Germany international Sane, who joined from Bayern Munich this season, became the only player in Champions League history to play for four or more clubs and score or assist on his debut for each of them.
Frankfurt, competing for only the second time in the Champions League main round, struggled to break through Galatasaray’s defence until a defensive error from Akgun in the 37th. Ritsu Doan pounced, charged into the box and Davinson Sanchez deflected the Japanese winger’s shot in for an own goal.
The hosts took the lead in first-half stoppage time when 19-year-old Turkey international Can Uzun scored a superb goal on his Champions League debut after fine control and a quick turn in the box. The hosts netted again before halftime with Jonathan Burkardt’s well-timed glancing header putting them 3-1 up.
With the visitors forced to take more risks after the break, Frankfurt found space and Burkardt completed his dream Champions League debut with another header in the 66th for his second goal of the evening. Ansgar Knauff completed the rout in the 75th.
Frankfurt next travel to Atletico Madrid on September 30 when Galatasaray host Liverpool.

Rashford shines with two goals in Barcelona’s 2-1 win at Newcastle

An inspired Marcus Rashford celebrated his return to English soil by scoring twice in nine second-half minutes to give Barcelona a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in their Champions League season opener at St James’ Park on Thursday.
Missing key players Lamine Yamal, Alejandro Balde, and Gavi through injury, the visitors had to weather an early storm as Newcastle pressed high relentlessly, with goalkeeper Joan Garcia making a fabulous reflex save to deny Harvey Barnes from close-range early in the game.
The five-time European champions gradually gained control of proceedings until English forward Rashford broke the deadlock in the 58th minute, scoring his first goal for Barcelona with an angled header from Jules Kounde’s right-wing cross that nestled just inside the left post beyond Nick Pope’s reach.
Rashford’s inspirational night continued nine minutes later when he pounced on a rebound at the edge of the box, set himself up with a quick glide to the right, and unleashed an unstoppable strike that flew past Pope before licking the crossbar into the top left corner.
Anthony Gordon reduced the deficit in the 90th minute, tapping-in a low cross from Jacob Murphy in a quick counter, but it was too little too late for Newcastle.
Following a great performance during Sunday’s 6-0 LaLiga win over Valencia, Rashford’s stunning double suggests he is finally recovering his old form after falling out of favour at Manchester United.
His back-to-back performances suggest that coach Hansi Flick’s personal bet on Rashford is paying off.
The German tactician made signing the English forward a priority during the close season and backed him to fill Yamal’s boots in their Champions League season debut.
“I’m not surprised,” Flick told Movistar Plus.
“I see what he is capable of every day in training and he is such a talented player. He scored two remarkable goals today. A goal is a goal, I need to watch both goals again, but the second one was probably better. The important thing is that he’s gaining confidence and that we help him to keep it going.”
The English forward has now scored seven goals against Newcastle during his career, with only Leicester City (eight goals) ahead of Newcastle in his personal scoring charts.
Scoring his first two goals for Barcelona on Thursday made his return to St James’ Park a particularly sweet.
“I’m learning a new way of playing football in Barcelona and that’s making me a better player,” Rashford told TNT Sports.
“It’s an incredible experience to play for Barcelona and we want to win as much as possible. It’s exciting to play with these lads.
“It’s difficult to be a starter because we have a team with top players. I’m arriving in a new city, a new culture… I’m feeling more comfortable every day. I’m enjoying it. As the season progresses, I think I’ll play better.”
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, who opted to deploy Gordon and bench new 69 million pound striker Nick Woltemade, saw his side struggle to break down Barcelona’s disciplined defence and succumbed to Rashford’s skills in the second half.
“Disappointing. We were really in the game. I never felt we were out of it,” Howe told TNT.
“I’m disappointed we didn’t score the first goal. That was crucial. We had the chances to do it. It was a whole-hearted gutsy display but maybe lacking the quality to get us the win.”

Flick backs Rashford to fill Yamal’s boots in Barcelona’s Champions League return

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is counting on Marcus Rashford to step up when the Catalans begin their Champions League campaign against Newcastle on Thursday, with teenage sensation Lamine Yamal sidelined by injury.
Rashford, who delivered an assist in Barcelona’s stunning 6-0 thrashing of Valencia on Sunday, has caught the eye of his German coach since arriving from Manchester United.
“I really follow Marcus (Rashford) since he started with Manchester United. And I always said, ‘Wow! What a player he is!’,” Flick told reporters at Wednesday’s press conference in Newcastle.
“He has speed, but also, in one-against-one situations, it’s really fantastic. And also finishing, it’s unbelievable.
“What I saw from him in the first weeks here, it’s very good. And I think also he still has potential to show us more.”
Yamal, who started the season strongly with two goals and two assists in LaLiga, will miss Thursday’s clash due to a hip injury on international duty with Spain. The 17-year-old may also be doubtful for Sunday’s match against Getafe.
Barcelona will also be without Alejandro Balde and Gavi, plus long-term absentee Marc-Andre ter Stegen, though Frenkie de Jong is available for selection.
“We all know that Lamine (Yamal) is not playing against Newcastle, maybe not on Sunday (against Getafe),” Flick said. “But at the end, we have a strong team and in his position we have Marcus Rashford. If someone up front cannot play, he can step up and play like he showed on Sunday against Valencia. That is how good he is. I hope that he can show in England the same performance he did on Sunday.”
The German coach remains confident about his team’s Champions League prospects despite facing stiff competition. “I’m not thinking about who the favourite is (to win the Champions League this season). There are some very good teams, mainly coming from the Premier League,” he said.
“What we saw against Valencia was very positive. We are playing well in all areas. With this confidence, it is important to play tomorrow. They are very strong, but we are confident.”

Galatasaray’s Fixtures Under Threat Over Osimhen’s Injury

Osimhen’s injury is also causing unease in Turkey, where Galatasaray are counting on their record signing for key matches this month.
The Turkish champions are scheduled to face Eyupspor in the Super Lig on September 14, before a crucial Champions League group opener against Eintracht Frankfurt on September 18.
Club officials have confirmed that Osimhen will undergo medical checks upon his return to Istanbul, but fears linger that he could miss one or both fixtures.
Given his explosive start to life at Galatasaray, his absence would be a huge blow as the club seeks to maintain domestic dominance and make a strong impression in Europe.
