As Morocco marked the 26th anniversary of King Mohammed VI’s accession to the throne on Wednesday, sports—particularly football—took centre stage at the grand state reception held at the Place of the Prefecture of M’diq-Fnideq.

The monarch, joined by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan and Prince Moulay Rachid, used the occasion to honour the rising profile of Moroccan football, notably the women’s national team, whose recent achievements have drawn international acclaim.

A key highlight of the ceremony was the special audience granted to FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).

Their presence signified the growing global recognition of Morocco’s investment in football development and its increasing influence in the sport’s international politics.

The women’s national football team, fresh from reaching consecutive finals of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON), received royal honours in front of the nation’s top officials and international guests.

Their feat, which included a runner-up finish in 2022 and a return to the final in the latest 2024 edition, was hailed as a landmark moment for women’s sport in Morocco and across the continent.

King Mohammed VI, an avid supporter of national sports, personally received the players and posed for a commemorative photograph with the team—underscoring the symbolic importance of their success in a country with growing ambitions on the continental and global football stage.

Under Fouzi Lekjaa’s leadership, Morocco has seen a golden era in football—evidenced by the Atlas Lions’ historic run to the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finals and the women’s qualification for their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.

The back-to-back WAFCON final appearances by the Lionesses of Atlas further underline Morocco’s rapid rise in African women’s football.

The presence of Infantino at the royal ceremony also highlighted Morocco’s role in co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal—a project seen as a defining moment in African football history.
