It is another 2 August. It is 27 years since Chioma Ajunwa lept over 7.12 metres to win Nigeria’s first gold medal in the country’s 44 years of participation at the Olympic Games.

That was at the Centennial Games in Atlanta in 1996. Days later, the men’s football team followed with gold medal.

The Atlanta’96 remains Nigeria’s best outing till date. Four years later, the men’s 4×100 relay team had an initial silver medal upgraded to gold to make Nigeria’s total gold medal till date to three.

But so far, no individual has won a gold medal making Ajunwa’s feat unique.
