‘Robbery!’ — Manchester United fans fume at VAR call for Real Sociedad penalty

Man United defender Lisandro Martinez conceded a penalty shortly after coming on as a substitute.

Manchester United went a goal down in their Europa League clash with Real Sociedad after the referee awarded a controversial penalty against defender Lisandro Martinez.

After a goalless first-half at Old Trafford, manager Erik ten Hag  — who made several changes for the game against the LaLiga giants — brought on Martinez and Bruno Fernandes in place of Diogo Dalot and Christian Eriksen respectively.

However, United harshly had penalty awarded against them in the 57th minute after Martinez was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the penalty area.

The referee’s decision to give the away side a penalty appeared to be very hard on United, especially given that the ball bounced up onto the Argentine’s arm after hitting him on the thigh.
