WAFCON quarter-final losers, eye World Cup ticket vie two-tie playoff

All hopes are not lost yet for the four teams that lost in the quarter-finals of the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. They may still make it to the Women’s World Cup but will have to navigate a tortuous course.

The four teams – Senegal, Tunisia, Cameroon and Botswana have been paired for a classification matches in which the two winners will advance to a 10-nation intercontinental playoff that will involve two teams each from Asia, South America, North & Central America and a team each from Europe and Oceania.  

The three top teams will qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup set to be held in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.

So this Sunday, Botswana will face Cameroon while Senegal and Tunisia will also have confrontations. The two winners will go into intercontinental play-off.

The winners of this game and that between Senegal and Tunisia will qualify for the 10-team playoff tournament that will have two teams from Asia (AFC), South America (CONMEBOL) as well as North America, Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF) and a team each from Europe (UEFA) and Oceania (OFC).

The three top teams will qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup set to be held in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.
