With the performances of most of the African giants at the 24-nation Africa Cup of Nations at discount, former Ghana inspirational skipper, Asmoah Gyan has disclosed that the best performance so far at the competition had been by the Nigeria Super Eagles.
Analysing the 24 teams during a studio programme on SuperSport studio from South Africa, he said that after the first set of the 12 group matches, it was only Nigeria that had played up to the standard expected at the premier African tournament.
He admitted that most of the teams were not playing at their optimum level owing to the new normal occasioned by the COVID 19 pandemic, he said that the Nigerian side defied the odds of late changing of coach as well as the absence of key strikers like Victor Osimhen, Paul Onuachu as well as Odion Ighalo and yet put up a scintillating performance against Mohamed Salah-inspired Egypt
“Yes, as of today Nigeria stands out as the team that has the will to conquer all opposition is going by what happened in the match against Egypt,” Gyan noted while on set as a guest analyst with SuperSports during the Cameroon versus Ethiopia match.
“Every other potential winner of the tournament seems to be playing with too much with caution and this explains why most of the matches have not been impressive. But when you look at Nigeria, they showed the character of a potential champion considering the way they dominated Egypt all through the 90 minutes.
“Nigeria deserved to score more goals in the match but they were unlucky in the final cut. This was a team that had its pre-tournament challenge as they were unable to have some of their best forwards for the tournament and playing a strong team like Egypt in the opening match was an acid test and they excelled,” he remarked.
