After the first set of matches in the six groups of the Africa Cup of Nations 2021 in Cameroon, it is obvious there is a goal draught.
As at Wednesday night when the 12th match was played, there were just 12 goals scored by the 24 competing teams.
In 2019 in Egypt where the competition was first enlarged to 24 teams, at this same stage there had been 27 goals. In Cameroon 2021, goal scoring had been at a low ebb. No match has produced a two-goal margin win.
The commonest scoreline of victories has been 1-0 as recorded in nine of 12 opening games of the groups. That included the 1-0 defeat of Egypt by Nigeria.
Two other matches ended in goalless draw as it was in the opening game involving Cameroon and Burkina Faso that more than a goal was scored. Cameroon won the match 2-1 in the three-goal thriller.
Still, the game fell within those not producing more than a goal margin win. Second round of games will begin this Thursday two matches on the card. Cameroon host Ethiopia while Cape Verde will attempt to consolidate on their 1-0 defeat of Ethiopia as they face Burkina Faso.
