Record winner of the Ballon d’or, Lionel Messi has told France Football the reason he dropped his famous and iconic number 10 when he moved from Barcelona to Paris Saint Germain.

“I’m new at the club, I was coming to help. It was a fantastic gesture on his (Neymar) part. I was expecting it, because I know Neymar well.

“We spent time together at Barcelona and we’re friends. It seemed fairer to me that he keep the number 10. It’s why I took another number I liked.”

Messi have instead opted to take the no.30 jersey at Paris Saint-German  which was the Argentine’s squad number during his first two seasons at Barcelona.
