Manchester United and Manchester City have been afforded a rare luxury in the Champions League this season.

Indeed, not only have they sealed progression with a game to spare, the Manchester clubs have also qualified as group runners as the marquee European competition prepares for its knock-out rounds.

The draw for the last-16 will be made in Nyon, Switzerland, at 11am on Monday, December 13.

Of course, United and City have to wait until February before they get down to business, yet again, though both have to first complete their group-stage schedules with ‘dead rubbers’ on December 7/8.

Liverpool, Ajax and Bayern Munich are the other teams who have already finished top of their respective piles.

That means first place is still all to play for in Group D, Group G and Group H – though some clubs have progressed without confirming their final position.

Having edged out Villarreal and Atalanta in Group F, the Old Trafford giants won’t go toe-to-toe with those teams, once again, until at least the quarter-final stage. That’s if they make it that far, while one is primed to be eliminated when they lock horns in Bergamo next month.

By the same token, City will avoid star-studded Paris Saint-Germain in the first knock-out round.

In theory, by the time the group stage is completed, there will be seven potential opponents for United and City – but that will be reduced to six if Chelsea are pipped into top-spot by Group H rivals Juventus.

All-English ties are not possible until the quarter-finals take place.
