As in boxing, ‘saved by the bell’, that was the Super Eagles’ narrow escape into making the top five in the monthly Fifa Ranking released this Thursday.

Even though in global ranking, the team dropped from 34th position of last month to 36th this time, it made the top five in the continent and should be one of the seeded sides among 10 when the final draw for World Cup qualification is made after the remaining two match days in Africa next month.

So far, among the top five, qualifiers for the last phase have emerged. They are Africa’s number 1, Senegal and third-placed Morocco. The Super Eagles will have to much to maintain the top five to be seeded when the final qualifying draw will be made in December.

The advantage of the seeding is that the team will play the last leg at home. However, that does not guarantee an easy draw as there are top African sides that may not make the top five and the Super Eagles could be drawn to face them.

In that league are Egypt, Ghana Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon. The next ranking would be published on the 25th of November, a week after the end of the qualifying round’s group stage.
