Mourinho aims to bring long-term success to Roma
New manager Jose Mourinho began work at Roma on Friday (July 2) promising to restore long-term prosperity after the Serie A club came 29 points behind champions Inter Milan in seventh last season.
“We want to make a Roma of success, but a future of success – not an isolated moment of success … we want to do something sustainable,” he told the club website.
Asked what had changed since he led Inter to two league titles in 2009 and 2010 and a Champions League win in 2010, Mourinho pointed at his record around Europe.
“Experience – it looks like everything becomes deja vu because you go through so many experiences. Since I left Italy I went to Real Madrid, which was an incredible experience, and I reached my dream of winning in Italy, England and Spain,” he explained.
“With so many experiences, and learning in the good moments and the bad moments, I am much more prepared now than I was.”
The 58-year-old Portuguese coach said he had an excellent relationship with club owners the Friedkin Group and general manager Tiago Pinto, although he did drop a hint that he would like some additions to the squad.
“I hope that the bosses and director Tiago have some gifts for me, because it would be nice. It would be an extra motivation for me,” he said.
On his first day in charge, Mourinho said he planned to stick around until the club, which has not won a trophy since the Italian Cup in 2008, had been returned to its former glory.
“Hopefully that success arrives with me, because the contract is a three-year contract – or, the first contract is, maybe there will be a second one day. So I hope that the results of our work will come during my time,” he said.

Africa’s most decorated table tennis legend Segun Toriola will lead Nigeria contingent to the 2024 ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships (WTTC) taking place in Busan, South Korea from February 16 to 25.
According to the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Toriola was picked based on his wealth of experience coupled with his cordial relationships with most of the top players in the national team.
With the formal retirement of the former national coach Nosiru Sule last year, Toriola became the best option for the federation as the best hand to handle the teams to the WTTC which also serves as a qualifying tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Toriola’s name is synonymous with Nigerian and African table tennis having won numerous African titles and appearing in seven Olympic Games, Toriola has been influential in Africa while he is respected globally.
At the Busan 2024 WTTC, the Nigerian men’s team have been drawn against Japan, Chinese Taipei, Czech Republic and Madagascar in Group 8 as the eight groups of five countries in each group will be aiming to advance to the knockout rounds.
Egypt, the African champions, will battle against Portugal, Romania, Iran and Thailand in Group 8, while Algeria will face France, Australia, Denmark and Austria.
In the women’s category, the Nigerian team were also grouped against Germany, Slovakia, Poland and Mexico, while the Egyptian ladies slugged it out against European teams – France, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Croatia in Group 8.
Algeria’s women face the massive task of battling Chinese Taipei, USA, Thailand and Chile in their group. The South African women’s team is pitted against Japan, Brazil, Luxembourg, and Iran in Group 2 of the women’s event.
China, the defending WTTC champions, occupy the top-seeded positions in both the men’s and women’s team events as the country’s ladies are placed in Group 1 with Hungary, India, Spain and Uzbekistan.
Each group will play a round-robin, with each team facing off against the other four teams in their group. After the round-robin, the top three teams from each group advance to the knockout phase. The top eight from the tournament get automatic tickets to the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The Nigerian delegation hopes for improved performance and a chance to clinch the Olympic tickets for both men’s and women’s events.
In 2023, Nigeria missed out on the continent’s sole ticket to the Games after losing finals of both gender categories to Egypt at the African Championships in Tunis.

TRUMP GOOFED IN CONGRATULATORY TWEET TO KANSAS CITY ON SUPER BOWL TRIUMPH
President Trump was quick to congratulate the Kansas City Chiefs for winning their first Super Bowl in 50 years Sunday night.
According to Washington Post, no sooner had the Chiefs dispatched the San Francisco 49ers than he tweeted:
“Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs on a great game and a fantastic comeback, under immense pressure. You represented the Great State of Kansas and, in fact, the entire USA, so very well. Our Country is PROUD OF YOU!”
His exuberance was understandable, given the exciting game, and Kansans are certainly proud of the Chiefs, but the team is based in and plays in Kansas City, Missouri, not Kansas. Residents of both states happily share the team, but are protective of their identities.
The tweet was quickly deleted and replaced with a corrected version of the same message.
“Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs on a great game and a fantastic comeback under immense pressure,” it read. “We are proud of you and the Great State of Missouri. You are true Champions!”
The Chiefs came roaring back from a double-digit deficit in the second half and won, 31-20, marking their first NFL championship since Super Bowl IV in 1970. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who led the comeback, was named the game’s MVP.
On “Fox & Friends” Monday, host Steve Doocy defended Trump’s earlier tweet.
“Kansas City is in Kansas and it is also in Missouri,” he said. “It’s like the difference between — people call them the New York Giants, but they’re in New Jersey.”
Not quite, but two cities sharing one name can be confusing. The Chiefs and Royals have venues (Arrowhead Stadium and Kauffman Stadium) in the Truman Sports Complex, which lies next to I-70 east of Kansas City, Missouri.
As its name would seem to indicate, that complex is near the Independence home of Harry S. Truman (which is also not in Kansas). The distance to the state line is just under 10 miles.
There is a misconception that the state line separates one big Kansas City and, while it’s true that the state line does separate them, Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan., are two distinct entities, each with its own government.
The one in Missouri was incorporated in 1853, with some parts of the city (like the Westport area; go to Kelly’s and perhaps have a beer or two) settled even before that. Kansas City, Kan., — known locally as KCK — was incorporated in 1872.
When it comes to the pro sports teams, though, the entire Kansas City area stakes a claim.
Although there are collegiate divisions along the University of Missouri and Kansas University lines, there’s near unanimity when it comes to supporting the Royals and Chiefs.
Much of the teams’ support comes from the Kansas suburbs that lie along the west side of State Line Road, which runs north and south along, you guessed it, the state line.

SUPER BOWL UPSET! KANSAS CITY CHIEFS RACE PAST 49ERS IN FINAL REEL FOR FIRST TITLE IN 50 YEARS
In the build-up to Super Bowl LIV we were repeatedly told that Patrick Mahomes is the future of the NFL. After he led the Kansas City Chiefs to a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night, we can safely say he’s the present too.
On paper, this was the most promising Super Bowl match-up in years, with the average ticket going for just north of US$5,000 ($6,840) on resale sites.
The Chiefs, with the most terrifying offensive weapons this side of an Imperial Star Destroyer, against the 49ers, with their brilliant rushing game perfectly complemented by one of the best defences in the league.
While the Niners came in as the better team, the Chiefs had the best player, the multi-talented Mahomes, whose ability to make every throw in the book – and some that aren’t – while also making plays with his feet has helped redefine the quarterback position.
However, almost inconceivably after the brilliant postseason he had enjoyed so far, Mahomes struggled on the opening drive of the game, failing to complete both of his pass attempts and the Chiefs were forced to punt.
Some see 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, unfairly, as a weak link for the 49ers: a competent, unspectacular quarterback, a low-calorie Tom Brady.
But the Niners chose to pay him US$25 million a year for a reason and he showed why as he combined with his strong rushing corps to set up the opening points of the game via a 38-year-old field goal from veteran kicker Robbie Gould.
The Chiefs presumably weren’t worried about conceding an early deficit. They had, after all, clawed themselves out of a 24-point hole against the Houston Texans earlier in the playoffs.
On the ensuing drive, Mahomes’ passing rhythm was once again off but he showed what elevates him above his peers when the Chiefs found themselves on the Niners’ goal line.
He wriggled past defenders for the game’s opening touchdown. If his arm doesn’t get you, his legs will.
He didn’t have to wait long to see if he could get his passing game in order. Garoppolo threw a sloppy pass under pressure at the start of the second quarter and the Chiefs’ Bashaud Breeland picked the ball off.
Mahomes’ first pass was launched deep for a 28-yard completion. His slump – if you could call it that – had lasted all of 15 minutes.
San Francisco managed to stifle the drive but a field goal extended the Chiefs’ lead to 10-3. The 49ers couldn’t afford to concede any kind of sizeable lead to the Chiefs, who can embark on game-killing scoring runs once Mahomes and his receivers are on a tear.
Salvation came in the form of Kyle Juszczyk who plays fullback, a crude battering ram of a position so out step with the complexity of the modern game that some teams don’t even carry one on their roster.
But Juszczyk is as close as you’ll get to a star fullback these days and he showed nice hands as he caught a touchdown reception off Garoppolo to tie the score at 10-10 going into the break, only the fourth half-time stalemate in Super Bowl history.
As the fans watched Shakira and Jennifer Lopez during the half-time show they could reflect on a hard-fought game if not the instant classic they may have expected given the build-up.
Garoppolo, meanwhile, continued to hit his receivers. He reeled off five straight completions to start the second half and another field goal from Gould gave the lead for the first-time since their opening drive of the game.
The 49ers’ defensive line, bristling with first-round picks, had yet to cause Mahomes too many problems. That wouldn’t last.
He was sacked by Nick Bosa and fumbled for the second time in the game.
Perhaps a little rattled, he then threw the ball into the welcoming arms of Niners linebacker Fred Warner.
Garoppolo was again accurate when he got the ball in his hands and nearly connected with Juszczyk for another touchdown but the fullback was tackled on the one-yard line. Running back Raheem Mostert, who had considered a career as a professional surfer before committing to football, rumbled over for the touchdown shortly afterwards.
The Niners’ defence was also containing Mahomes, as much as anyone can, and slowed him down enough that the Chiefs entered the fourth quarter 10 points down.
For the Chiefs, built to blow teams away with their speed and Mahomes’ fireworks, this was deeply unfamiliar territory, and the quarterback was about to crack again. Looking for the explosive Tyreek Hill he instead found the Niners’ Tarvarius Moore and San Francisco had the opportunity to put the ball in the hands of their running backs and run down valuable time.
When the Chiefs got the ball back, after San Francisco punted, there were just over eight minutes left and the 49ers’ lead was still 10.
The game looked to be slipping away when the Chiefs had a third and 15 in their own territory. But Mahomes found an open Hill for a 44-yard gain, and then a pass interference call on the 49ers put the ball on the one-yard line, the same spot where they had scored their opening touchdown.
This time Mahomes threw rather than ran the touchdown, connecting with tight end Travis Kelce. If his legs don’t get you, his arm will.
The 49ers led 20-17 with six minutes to go. Mahomes was starting to look like the player who had dominated opposing defences for the past two seasons. He seemed certain to be sacked by the 49ers at one point, but jinked away for a completion. Two plays later he hit Sammy Watkins for a 38-yard gain, three plays later he had thrown another touchdown, which was given after a long review by the officials.
The frustration Mahomes causes opposing defenders is brutal. The Chiefs, who had entered the quarter 10 points down, they now had a four-point lead.
A few minutes later, the Chiefs had won their first Super Bowl in 50 years, with their quarterback at the heart of the victory.
Football is a team game, but a player like Mahomes can make all the difference.
