FOOTBALL ACADEMICALS GO CONTINENTAL AS CAF ADOPTS INTER SCHOOLS’ TOURNAMENT
Reminiscence of the academicals’ football tournament involving Nigeria and Ghana in the 1960s up to early 1970s, a similar competition on continental basis is in the offing in Africa.
This is sequel to the adoption of a pilot interschool competition by Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the CAF President.
According to a media release by the confederation, Motsepe, together with CAF Secretary General, Véron Mosengo-Omba, during a working visit to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, signed an agreement with the Secretary General of FIFA, Fatma Samoura, the Minister of Sports and Recreation of the DRC, Marcel Amos Mbayo Kitenge and the President of the Congolese Football Federation (“FECOFA”), Constant Omari.
Dr Motsepe stated that the interschool competition which was launched in the DRC is a pilot project which will lead to the establishment of an interschool competition in the six African zones resulting in a Pan-African school’s championship final.
He also said that one of the best investments in the future and success of African football is to invest in school’s football and the building of youth football academies for boys and girls.
During his stay in Kinshasa, President Motsepe also paid a courtesy visit to the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, who supports the organization of football tournaments in schools across the country and as well as in the rest of the African continent.”
