Barcelona have confirmed that they are appealing the two-match ban imposed on their captain, Lionel Messi.
The club wants the star player to get suspended for just one game. The player was suspended for two matches over the red card he got in the dying minutes of their Super Cup loss to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
The club is hoping to overturn the decision so the captain will miss just one game, Thursday’s Copa del Rey fixture against Cornella. It was Messi’s first-ever red card for Barcelona in 753 official matches.
If the suspension isn’t lifted, Messi will also miss the La Liga game against Elche this Sunday. He will return either for the Copa del Rey clash next midweek – if Barca qualify – or for the league fixture against Athletic Bilbao on January 31
