Enyimba are very close to the exit gate of this season’s CAF Champions League after crumbling miserably 3-0 to Sudan’s Al Merrikh on Wednesday.
No thanks to the hattrick by Saifeldin Bakhit which has now offered Enyimba a huge mountain to climb in January when the return leg is expected to be played in Aba.
Coincidentally, it was a Sudanese club, Al Hilal that eliminated Enyimba at the same stage last year. Is history repeating itself?
Well, Enyimba have the Tanzanian club, Simba Lions as inspiration. The Tanzanians lost 4-0 away to Zambia’s Mufulira Wanderers in the then African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1979 only to win the return leg 5-0.
Back home, Shooting Stars at the 1999 CAF Champions League found themselves in similar precarious situation just like the current one by Enyimba.
In the first leg first round of the competition, they went down 3-0 to AS Kaloum Stars of Guinea in Conakry. But in the return leg in Ibadan, Shooting Stars overwhelmed the Guineans who went back with a 6-0 defeat.
Can Enyimba find inspirations in those examples and bounce back? The events of 6 January 2021 will offer the answer.
