What a twist of fate! World football legend, Diego Maradona died this Wednesday 25 November, exactly four years after the death of his political hero, Fidel Castro of Cuba.
Maradona became friends with Castro while receiving medical treatment in Cuba and he had tattoos of the Cuban leader and his former comrade Che Guevera. He was also a supporter of ex-Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.
It is also 15 years to the day after another troubled but talented football folk hero, George Best died.
Beloved in his homeland after leading Argentina to win the 1986 World Cup and adored in Italy after taking Napoli to two Serie A titles, Maradona was uniquely gifted player and chasrismatic figure.
He had recently battled health issues and underwent emergency surgery for a subdural haematonma several weeks ago.
He reportedly suffered a heart attack at his home in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, acquaintances of the former player said. His death was confirmed by his lawyer.
