On this date 16 October 2004, the now global football legend, Lionel Messi made his first team debut at Barcelona when the 17 year old came in as a 82nd minute substitute for Deco in a 1-0 defeat of Espanyol.

In doing so, he became the youngest debutant for Barcelona in an official competition.

At the time, the focus was on Ronaldinho, Espanyol players playing dirty and their fans causing trouble in the stands; the focus was on anything bar Leo Messi who made his competitive debut for Barcelona that day.

Messi had little time to impact the game as he had only 17 words in ESPN’s match report:

“Later, Leo Messi made his debut, a 17-year-old Argentine who is the pearl of the Barcelona youth squad,”

The Argentine went on to play nine first-team games that season, including his Champions League debut against Shakhtar Donetsk.
