Seventeen years ago today, Ghana’s Patrick Agyemang scored the first goal in an international match at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. It was in a 3-1 victory by Nigeria in the 2003 LG Cup.

The goal was also one of the fastest scored at the first all-covered and all seat arena in Nigeria.  The goal was scored within the opening two minutes of the match.

The Super Eagles later braced up in the second half, with Yakubu Aiyegbeni scoring from the penalty spot in the 49th minute. He shot Nigeria ahead the 71st minute. Eleven minutes later, Joseph Enakarhire scored the last goal to give Nigeria a 3-1 win.

It all happened on this date, 30 May in 2003 in the first double-header encounter of the 2003 LG Cup.  Shortly after the match, Cameroon beat Iran 2-1 in the four-nation tournament.

By beating Ghana 3-1, Nigeria kept five matches with only one goal conceded at most in encounters with Ghana at home running since 24 August 1977.
