TESLIM BALOGUN STADIUM COMMISSIONING ALSO MARKS THUNDER BALOGUN’S WIFE’S MEMORIAL

It is 22 years since Alhaja Mulikat Balogun, wife of Nigerian football legend, Thunder’ Balogun passed on.  On this date, 25 May 2007, nine years after Alhaja Balogun passed on,  Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the then outgoing governor of Lagos State, officially commissioned the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

The event effectively overrode an earlier hurriedly one conducted by Brig. General Buba Marwa who on the eve of his departure as Military Administrator of Lagos prematurely commissioned the arena on May 27, 1999.

At the time, the playing ground was bare and enormous works were still going on at the stands. Even years later, the arena was still begging for completion.

When it was completed during the tenure of Tinubu, the first event it hosted was the 18th Mobil Track and Field Athletics on 17 May 2007.

The first official match at the stadium was a friendly match contested by Enyimba FC and Ghana’s Kumasi Asante Kotoko on 28 May 2007.

It was one of the venues for the 2009 FIFA Under-17 World Cup. It also hosted a Super Eagles versus Sierra Leone friendly match on 9 February 2011.
