BUNDESLIGA: TAIWO AWONIYI ENDS GOAL DROUGHT WITH FIRST CLUB GOAL AFTER ONE YEAR

Liverpool FC loanee and Nigerian international, Taiwo Awoniyi on Sunday found the back of the net for the first time since May 17 2019, when his team Mainz 05 played against FC Koln following the return of the 2019/2020 season of the German Bundesliga which was suspended due to coronavirus pandemic.

Before the game, Awoniyi had a disappointing time in the last six games he played for the club this season firing blank.

Mainz were trailing by two goals before substitute, Awoniyi pulled one back five minutes after he was introduced before another African, Pierre Kunde from Cameroon who marked his 50th appearance for the club leveled for the visitors.

Awoniyi’s goal was his first in all competitions for Mainz, his first goal in Europe’s top five leagues and he also became the youngest Nigerian to score in the Bundesliga since his compatriot Anthony Ujah who is currently at Union Berlin.

The draw against FC Koln which also had a late introduction of another Nigerian, Kingsley Ehizibue has left Mainz on 15th place as Coach Beierlorzer’s team prepare for their next game against 4th placed RB Leipzig on Sunday.
