CHANNELS U18 ATHLETICS CLASSICS HOLD NEXT MONTH

The second edition of the Channels U18 Athletics Classics is set to hold between Wednesday, 13th and Thursday 14th of November. At the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. 

Invited secondary school students from both the private and public sectors across the six (6) districts of Lagos State are expected to attend. 

Athletes who are secondary school students and are below 18 years are expected to take part in the two-day meet. 

Events to feature in the competition include 100, 200, 400 and 800 metres races. And also the 4X100 and 4X400 relay races. Alongside long jump, high jump and short put. 

The overall aim of the competition is to scout, discover and develop talents that abound in our secondary school system. About 49 secondary schools took part in last year’ inaugural championship which recorded some outstanding results. Over 60 schools have signified interest in being part of this year’ edition, as some schools have already started preparations for the Nov 13/14 Classics.

According to the Technical Director of the Classics Prince Henry Amike, this year’ competition is expected to be an improvement on last year’ where key talents were discovered. Amongst the discovered athlete was Fatola Adedoyin who went on to represent Nigeria at the Africa Youth Games.

Kunle Solaja is the author of landmark books on sports and journalism as well as being a multiple award-winning journalist and editor of long standing. He is easily Nigeria’s foremost soccer diarist and Africa's most capped FIFA World Cup journalist, having attended all FIFA World Cup finals from Italia ’90 to Qatar 2022. He was honoured at the Qatar 2022 World Cup by FIFA and AIPS.
