Former winners, Enyimba will live to rue missed chances after they were held to a barren draw in Aba by ten-man Al Hilal in the CAF Champions League first leg of the Round of 16 on Sunday.
Hilal were reduced to a man less midway through the first half after Bazar Hamid Nassir was shown a straight red card for an off the ball incident 20 minutes into the game.
Enyimba dominated the match courtesy of their numerical advantage and had the lion’s share of chances but could not get the ball into the net in their home turf.
Enyimba threatened from the first whistle and just within four minutes, they had already threatened with Nelson Ogbonnaya hitting the ball against the side netting after picking up full back Stanley Okorom’s freekick.
Uganda-born goalie Salim Magoola came to Hilal’s rescue five minutes to the break when he went down well to save Rueben Bala’s effort who had been sent through on goal by Chukwudi Onwudi.
Bala came close again in the second half but his shot went over.
Magoola made another fine save 13 minutes to full time when he did well to parry away substitute Martin Usule’s header. Hilal host the return in a fortnight in Omdurman.
