VIDEO: MARADONA CLAIMS HE TAUGHT MESSI TO BE KING OF FREE-KICKS

It is well known that one of Lionel Messi’s’ great attributes is the conversion of free-kicks. It was in similar fashion that he scored the second of his two goals in a 3-2 defeat of Nigeria at the Brazil 2014 World Cup.

The legendary Diego Maradona has now let the cat out of the back announcing how he made Messi, the king of free-kick takers.

Sports Village Square gathered from Spanish publication, Tribuna, Maradona made a dive into the past and reminded of the times when he was coaching Argentina.

One of his best memories is how he taught Messi to score from free-kicks.

“He [Lionel] had an issue with free-kicks.

“When we finished every training session, we kept Leo behind so he could practice, and he started to hit the post.

“I didn’t teach him how to take a free-kick, then he asked me how he was able to score. I said, “you just have to hit it in the middle. They aren’t going to give me an Oscar to teach you this.” And he replied, “but I hit it in the middle and the ball goes this way or that way”. I told him, “don’t worry, you’re going to make it.”

“Now he just can’t miss.”

Diego Maradona coached Argentina from 2008 and 2010, however, he didn’t manage to meet the expectations as his national team didn’t proceed to the World Cup semifinals after they were demolished by Germany, 4-0.
