The football event of the All Africa Games may be heading to a deadlock as the Morocco versus South Africa match, which was supposed to be the very first event of the Games did not hold on Friday.

Instead, it was what was supposed to be the second match, Nigeria versus Burkina Faso that held as the only match.

Sports Village Square gathered that the opening match did not hold because South Africa sent their Under 23 team to the African Games instead of the Under 20 team.

As a result, the scheduled match with Morocco was cancelled. No further information has been offered, but Morocco may be declared the winner after South Africa’s no-show.

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria are supposed to meet South Africa on Tuesday. The fixture is now in doubt.

Ghana was the only team to record victory on the opening day of the men’s event after beating Burundi 2-1 in their Group B clash on Saturday at Stade Municipal El Manssouria.

Awudu Tahiru scored twice in the 18th minute and two minutes later to give the Ghanaians a 2-0 lead before Cedric Mavugo reduced the deficit two minutes before the break.

Both teams failed to find the back of the net the closely contested second half.

In the other Group B match, Senegal and Mali played out a barren draw also at the same venue.
