The solitary goal that Odion Ighalo scored against Burundi in Nigeria’s opening match with Burundi in the on-going Africa Cup of Nations has been compared with that Benedict Iroha in the 1994 edition.

The similarity of the two goals has been trending on different Whatsapp platforms in Nigeria. Against Burundi last Saturday, Olaoluwa Aina cleverly back heeled the ball to a well-positioned Ighalo who fired past the Burundi goalkeeper from a close range.

In that of 1994 semi-final duel with Cote d’Ivoire, Rashidi Yekini , like Aina did last Saturday, back heeled the ball to a well positioned Iroha, a left back, who had made a sortie upfront.

Iroha fired home past the Ivorian goalkeeper to level the scores at 1-1 after Michel Bassole had put Cote d’Ivoire ahead. Bassole later scored a second goal which Rashidi Yekini later equalized.

Nigeria advanced to the final match after 4-2 win in penalty shootout. Nigeria won the final tournament. The similarity of the two goals has prompted speculations that Nigeria may win the Africa Cup of Nations again as they did in 1994. Both tournaments are in North Africa.
