Super Falcons are out of the Women’s World Cup after losing 0-3 to favourites, Germany in the Round of 16 match in Grenoble, France.

What a match! Germany’s two first half goals were subjected to Video Assistant Referee review, which ultimately went against the Nigerian side.

First goal was by Germany’s skipper, Alexandra Popp on the occasion of her 100th international appearance.

It was the second time, her goal would hurt Nigeria having opened scoring in Nigeria’s 0-2 loss at the final match of 2010 Women’s U20 World Cup in Germany.

On this occasion, Lina Magull’s corner found the Popp in space, and she guided her header into the bottom corner. Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie didn’t even move!

But VAR operators later informed the referee of a possible offside position by another German player. The goal was later confirmed.

Five minutes later, Evelyn Nwabuoku let her studs-up after a challenge on Lina Magull and, after consulting with the Video Assistant Referee, the official on the field has awarded Germany a penalty kick, converted by Sara Daebritz .

With those two goals, the Super Falcons became a struggling side. Lea Schueller put in a third goal to confirm Germany’s quarterfinals ticket. This is the second time Nigeria got to the Round of 16 and failed to advance.
