Nigeria’s Super Eagles have a date with destiny this Monday as they face hosts, France, in their last Group A encounter of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Result of the match will decide whether the Nigerian side will advance to the next stage of the competition. It has been 20 years since the Super Falcons achieved that.
Co-incidentally, France 2019 has had almost the same colouration as that of 1999 edition when Nigeria last moved beyond the group stage. As it was 20 years ago, Nigeria are again in Group A against the host country.
As it was 20 years ago, Nigeria lost a group game with high margin. It was 7-1 in June 1999 in the encounter with the US. Twenty years later, they have lost 3-0 to Norway.
Like they did at the USA ’99, when they beat Denmark 2-0 to advance to the next stage, the Falcons at the weekend beat Korea 2-0 to raise prospects of going to the next stage.
Will they be able to hold their nerves against the hosts, tonight?
