On Sunday Rivers United FC will be looking to become the first side to defeat MFM FC in Lagos in this season’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
Winning at the ‘Soccer Temple’ the Agege Township Stadium, Lagos against MFM is however, easier said than done.
MFM represent an incredibly solid proposition at home and have yet to suffer defeat this term at their stately patch.
Rivers United however arrive in Lagos in extremely fine fettle having dismantled runaway group A leaders, Enugu Rangers 3-0 in Port Harcourt in a rescheduled game on Thursday.
It was Rivers United’s best display of the season and the ‘Pride of Rivers’ appear to look like a slumbering giant finally stirring from hibernation.
Technical Manager of United, Stanley Eguma understands the size of the task at hand and concedes that his charges will face some stern examination on Sunday.
“MFM is a good side and they are a team that is made up of many youthful players who are raring to go,” Eguma told the official Rivers United FC website, www.riversunitedfc.com.ng.
“Playing against them in Lagos is like playing in a neutral ground so we have to go there and prepare our minds to get a good result.
“We are not going to approach the game like it’s a fixture we are prosecuting away from home.
“This is like a home game to us and we will carry the fight to them.
“Our target is to pull off a surprise in Lagos,” Eguma concluded.
A win for MFM will see them strengthen their position in the playoff places while United will leapfrog their hosts on the log if they tear the form books to shreds on Sunday.
This one has all the trappings of a classic and an intriguing contest of box office proportions is potentially on the cards.
