A former Real Madrid boss, Ramon Calderon has revealed why Jose Mourinho who was at the brink of returning as manager of Real Madrid failed at the last moment.

According to Spanish publication, Tribuna, the Real Madrid “dressing room leaders” rejected Mourinho.

According to Calderon, it as a general belief that Mourinho would become another ‘problem’ at the club.

But on the other hand, Zinedane Zidane was loved by the players and believed will be able to manage the club with strong hands.

Zidane came back to his home club to replace sacked Santiago Solari – nine months after leading the club to three successive Champions League titles.

Even though ex-Madrid president Ramon Calderon had previously suggested Mourinho was club’s top target, he now says  key dressing room leaders declined that proposal:

“The dressing room leaders pushed to reject the possibility of Jose Mourinho.”

“He left [Real Madrid] a lot of problems and I think he would have been another problem to the ones we already have if he had come.”

“I think Jose Mourinho would have been a step backward, there was a lot of problems and controversy when he was here.”

“He is a good coach with a lot of trophies but many of the leaders in the dressing room didn’t like him and I think that was important in the decision-making.”

Zidane, on the other hand, was universally loved by fans and players alike, as per Calderon:

“The players loved him and he was able to change the ideas of coaches like Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho who managed with a strong hand.”

“And of course he is an idol with the fans – playing for the club as well as managing them to three Champions League trophies in a row.”
