LIKE NIGERIA, PERU LOSES FIFA TOURNEY HOSTING RIGHTS

Just as it happened to Nigeria 30 years ago when FIFA revoked the country’s hosting rights for the 1991 World Youth Championship, Peru has had to swallow similar bitter pill.

FIFA has announced the revocation of the country’s hosting rights for this year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup. According to media release by the world football governing body, the action was taken following various inspection visits and further meetings with the Peruvian Football Association (FPF).

FIFA reports that in view of a number of organisational and infrastructure challenges linked to the event delivery, the Bureau of the FIFA Council has decided that the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2019 will no longer be staged in Peru.

FIFA would like to express its thanks to the FPF and the Peruvian authorities for their efforts, and remains open to organising a competition in Peru in the future.

In the case of Nigeria, the country eventually hosted the U-20 tournament eight years after the originally designated period. Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets, record winners of the tournament, are still in line for the qualification for the final tournament.
