Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr has commended the sudden renaissance of central attacker, Odion Ighalo who has shot into the zenith of top scorers at the qualifying series of 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
He was singled out for harsh criticism following Nigeria’s ouster at the World Cup. The player later revealed that his family got death threats from football fans.
Rohr told the November 2018 edition of South African publication, Kick Off that Ighalo’s motivation was immense.
“He wanted to prove his critics wrong. He was criticized heavily after the World Cup and he wanted to silence his doubters.
‘We encouraged him and expressed our trust in him. He thanked us with his goals. Also, he benefited from his teammates assisting him.
“From Alex Iwobi to Ahmed Musa, they were able to play brilliant passes and Ighalo benefited from our collective attacking football as a team”, remarked Rohr.
