Tennis great, Rafael Nadal will play in the Davis Cup that has been significantly changed by Gerard Pique whose business company has been recruited to help turn the Davis Cup to tennis version of FIFA World Cup.
Pique, a defender in FC Barcelona however failed in the bid to get two other tennis world stars, Roger Fereder and Novak Djokovic to participate.
The British Daily Mail, quote the Barca defender that the Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal has agreed to participate in Pique’s new Davis Cup.
“If the No. 1 in the world is playing, that’s more than enough,” the centre-back said.
Barcelona man has supposedly failed to get Roger Fereder and Novak Djokovic’s consents with the former even criticising Pique’s initiative.
“For us tennis players it’s a bit strange to see a footballer come into our world. He should be careful. The Davis Cup should not become the Pique Cup,” the tennis legend said.
The radical plans have been the talk of tennis since they were announced by ITF president David Haggerty in February and have generated strong opposition.
From 2019, the Davis Cup will begin with one traditional home-and-away round in February before an 18-team event staged over one week at the end of November decides the winners of the competition.
Pique has been chasing his Tennis World Cup dream since 2015 when he met with the commercial director of the ITF and its vice president in Barcelona.
