CAF CONFEDERATION CUP GROUP THRILLER: ENYIMBA IN LAST MINUTE ESCAPE TO VICTORY

CAF CONFEDERATION CUP GROUP THRILLER: ENYIMBA IN LAST MINUTE ESCAPE TO VICTORY

BY MUYIWA AKINTUNDE.

GROUP C: Enyimba (Nigeria) 1-0 CARA Brazzaville (Congo Republic) (first leg CARA Brazzaville 3-0), Williamsville AC (Côte d’Ivoire) 0-0 Djoliba (Mali) (first leg 1-1)

Wasiu Alalade’s shot off Mfon Udoh’s freekick in added time has earned Enyimba maximum points to win the group and qualify for the last eight.

What a great escape! Tensed up possibly owing to playing for the first time in almost three years in their newly renovated stadium, Enyimba missed a couple of chances.

But the end justified the means and atoned for the great misses earlier on.

Consolation for the visiting CARA of Brazzaville who were toppled from the group leadership, they also progress despite their defeat.

The results from another group run thus:

GROUP D: Rayon Sports (Rwanda) 1-0 Young Africans (Tanzania) (first leg 0-0), USM Alger (Algeria) 2-1 Gor Mahia FC (Kenya) (first leg 0-0)

Early pacesetters Gor Mahia crash, failing  to make history as the first Kenyan club to reach the knock-out stages of the continental competition.

USM Alger and Rayon Sports meanwhile move on to the quarterfinals.
