NIGERIA TO BID FOR 2025 WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Athletics Federation Nigeria (AFN) is pushing for Nigeria to bid for the World Athletics Championship. The event has never held in Africa. But the AFN boss, Ibrahim Gusau told a press conference at the 21st Africa Athletics Championships in Asaba that Nigeria is “very much in strong contention to stage the games in 2025”.

The push might have been informed by remarks by Sebastian Coe, the President of International Athletics Federation (IAAF) that an African city could stage the event. A source close to Nigeria’s Ministry of Sports informed that Abuja may likely be put forward by Nigeria.

Five countries including Nigeria are believed to be in contention. Gusau believes that “the gains of what we have done here (Asaba 2018), we have all it takes to stage the global event in 2025 and perhaps any other major sporting event on a large scale”.

The other likely bidding countries include South Africa, Kenya and Morocco.
