IS PEP GUARDIOLA’S AURA SHAPING THE WORLD CUP?

BY KUNLE SOLAJA.

Josep “Pep” Guardiola Sala, better known as Pep Guardiola is the manager of English Premier League champions, Manchester City.

He was the manager of FC Barcelona from 2008 to 2012 and led the club to La Liga victory in the seasons 2008/09, 2009/10, 2010/11.

The only World Cup in that period was the South Africa 2010. Spain not only become the latest new winner of the World Cup, they were the first European sides to win the World Cup outside Europe.

Perhaps, that could be considered a coincidence. Guardiola in 2013 moved to Germany to handle Bayern Munich, a club he managed till the season 2015/16.

For the period he managed Bayern Munich, the club emerged the German Bundesliga champions and the only World Cup that fell within the period was Brazil 2014.  Germany emerged winners.

He moved to the English Premiership in 2016 and led, almost with ease, Manchester City to English Premiership title. The World Cup of the period is the on-going Russia 2018 and England are already among the top three as the Sunday final match draws near.

‘Magic Man’ Pep Guardiola.

Could this be another pointer to the possibility of England winning? Is football truly coming home? Is the aura of Pep Guardiola shaping nations’ destinies at the World Cup?

Time and events of Wednesday and possibly that of Sunday will tell. If that happens, will Nigeria offer Pep Guardiola a club job ahead of Qatar 2022 to ensure a Super Eagles’ victory? His Nigerian club will win the NPFL and the Super Eagles will win the World Cup in Asia. After all, four of Nigeria’s U-17 World Cup came from Asia!
