The first university solely for physical education is in the offing in Nigeria. Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung informed www.sportsvillagesquare.com that the university is being set up with collaboration with the University of Physical Education, Budapest, Hungary.

According to the minister, the Nigerian sports minister, a joint committee is being set up for the implementation of the project. He explained that the institution defers from the regular universities where Physical and Health Education is offered as mainly academic discipline.

He explained that the major qualification for admission into the proposed university of physical education will be sports talent, not necessarily educational qualification.

“While the students are being groomed in their various sports disciplines, education will be added so that when they graduate, they can pursue their career in sports and when their sporting careers are over, they have their academic certificates to fall back to.

“This way, they had two certificates; one in sports, the other in academics”, explained the sports minister.  He explained further that he had been to Budapest to see the main campus which template will be replicated in Nigeria.

The University of Physical Education in Hungary was established in 1925. The institution which has a student population of 2,420 is the oldest, largest and most comprehensive centre for physical education and activity, sports and related sciences in Hungary.

It is also a doctoral school in sports science. In the beginning, it was called the Hungarian Royal College of Physical Education.

It changed to Hungarian University of Physical Education in 1985. In the year 2000, it was renamed as Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences before changing name to University of Physical Education (TE), Budapest in 2014.
