OLAJIDE OMOTAYO INCHES CLOSER TO MAIN DRAW OF SPANISH OPEN

Published

on

Olajide Omotayo continues to improve in every tournament and this was reflected in his performance at the ongoing ITTF Challenge Spanish Open as the former national junior champion on Wednesday put a step forward in his bid to make it to the main draw of the men’s singles.

Aware of what it means to play in the main draw with the elite players, Omotayo was fired up by the performance of his compatriot- Aruna Quadri last week at the Swedish Open and he turned the tide against Turkey’s Ibrahim Gunduz in the first Group Four match of the preliminary round.

Despite being seeded below his opponent, Omotayo started well against the Turk with 12-10, 11-5 wins but his opponent rallied back to win the third game at 11-3.

Knowing what was at stake, Omotayo did not play to the gallery as he wasted no time to dismiss the European star in the next two games at  11-8, 12-10 to complete the 4-1 rout.

This win has boosted the confidence of the Italy-based Nigerian as his last group match will be against Kazakhstan’s Denis Zholudev on Thursday November 23.

Also, on same day, Omotayo will partner Nigeria-born Congo Brazzaville’s star – Saheed Idowu in the doubles event and they are expected to battle against their Irish counterparts in the preliminary round of the event.

Also, an opportunity in recent times Hong Kong’s Jiang Tianyi has not enjoyed the best of fortunes but at least he does have the consolation of two ITTF World Tour Men’s Singles titles to his name. In 2008 he won in Brazil, in 2015 in Hungary.

It is an achievement that despite all his efforts, has avoided Austria’s Robert Gardos; one the hardest working players you could ever meet, time is running out for the now 38 year old.

He has come near but never near enough; in 2006 he hit a purple patch, a series of good results, at the ITTF World Tour Chile Open in Santiago, he came within a whisker of gold. In the final, he was beaten by Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus. Furthermore, he was so close to two titles on that day.

From the way things are panning out at the 4th Michael & Felicia Alabi Memorial National Table Tennis Championships, it is obvious that the players are not ready to concede defeats to themselves as top seed Amadi Umeh affirmed his intention to clinch another national title in Otan Ayegbaju, Osun State.

Also, Akinwale Fagbamila and Augustine Emmanuel are battle ready to stun Umeh, whose national team experience will come to the fore when the main draws (round of 16) kick off on Wednesday, April 24.

The annual tournament, which has been upgraded to a national ranking event by the national table tennis ruling body, the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), is organised by the Osun State Table Tennis Association (OSTTA) with support from the Michael & Felicia Alabi Memorial Foundation as well as Canada-based Jodal Health Care had players from 28 states across the country competing in 14 events.

Also, the finals of the deaf and para events will take centre stage as dignitaries across Osun are expected to grace the event as a build-up to the grand finale on Friday, April 26.

Umeh, who won one of the national tournaments in 2023 and was part of the national team for the 13th African Games, believes he would be unstoppable in the men’s singles. “I don’t see anyone stopping me here because I am familiar with most of them, and they are no match for me. But I will not underrate them, as I am here for business, which is to take home the grand prize. I must also commend the sponsors for raising the standard of the tournament this year because the organisation has been much better than the previous editions,” the Edo State star said.
