KROBAPOR, DORCAS RULE KATSINA BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP

The duo of Krobapor Clement and Dorcas Adesokan were dominant defeating their opponents in the finals of the 1st Katsina Golden Star Badminton Championship on Saturday to emerge winners in the Singles and mixed doubles event of the competition.

In the Men’s singles final, Krobapo came from behind losing the first game to Anuoluwapo Opeyori of Lagos state 14-21 before winning the match 14-21, 21-13, 21-19.

Krobapor, the highest ranked Nigerian player had earlier in the day won the mixed doubles event.

He did this while partnering with Dorcas Adesokan, Nigeria’s highest ranked female player to beat the duo of Eneojo Abah and Peace Orji 21-16, 21- 8. In a chat with www.badmintonnigeria.org, Krobapor thanked his coaches and co-players for their efforts.

“I want to thank my Coaches Bello and Ayo also my co-players for motivating me. I was determined to win the national championship despite the huge pressure. It’s over and I thank God I won”.

In the women’s singles final, Dorcas Adesokan of Ogun State defeated Deborah Ukeh of Edo State 21-12, 21-14 while the duo of Augustina Sunday and Zainab Mommoh edged out Deborah Ukeh and Peace Orji in a keenly contested encounter which ended 23-21, 21-16 to emerge champions.

In a chat with www.badmintonnigeria.org Dorcas thanked the board of the Badminton Federation led by Francis Orbih for reviving the national championship which was in coma for over four years.

“I am delighted that the National Championship is back thanks to the BFN President Francis Orbih.

Talking about my victory I want to believe that my level of exposure attending international competitions gave me an edge but Deborah is another good player”.

Another final event on Saturday saw the duo of Augustina Sunday and Zainab Mommoh beat Deborah Ukeh and Peace Orji 23-21, 21-16 to win the women’s doubles event.

Meanwhile, the home fans celebrated as the Duo of Jimkan and Menaphee defeated Habeeb and Usman 21-18, 21-17 to win the men’s doubles event.

Malik Anas the patron Golden Star Badminton Club Katsina told www.badmintonnigeria.org that the national championship will be an annual event.

“We are delighted that 26 states and four military agencies took part in this championship which is the first edition.

“I want to tell you that I am discussing with the board of the Badminton Federation to make this an annual event which means 2018 will be bigger and better”.
