It was a splendid outing for the Nigerian squad at the 8th African Arm Wrestling Championship as it emerged the overall winner of the competition.
When the curtain fell on the two-day event at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos on Saturday night, Team Nigeria had amassed 19 gold, 16 silver and 11 bronze medals.
The complexion of the final table started emerging Thursday night with the Nigerian team winning laurels as the competitions opened in 10 different categories.
In the Left Arm category, Nigeria battled for supremacy against Ghana, Cameroon, Mali and Egypt. In the end, the Nigerian side had shot ahead with three gold, four silver and two bronze medals.
In the final analysis, Team Ghana emerged second place with 10 gold, five silver and six bronze medals, while Mali finished third with eight gold, four silver medals and a bronze.
In the fourth place was Egypt with five gold and three silver medals. Cameroon finished in fifth place winning two gold and two silver medals.
The countries participated in 27 events in the Right and Left Arm. The high point of the closing ceremony was the handing over of the hosting flag from the president of the Nigeria Arm Wrestling Federation, Samuel Jackson to the president of the Ghana Arm Wrestling Federation, Charles Ossei as hosts of the ninth edition of the African championship which holds in Accra, Ghana in April 2018.
