Akwa United’s Maikaba Eyes First League Title

BY KINGSLEY OYERO.

It will be a first for him just as it will be for his club, Akwa United if the Nigerian league title should rest in Uyo at the end of the current season.
But it is certainly not a mere day dream. Akwa United manager, Abdul Maikaba, feels his side are still in the race to claim their first NPFL crown
Despite being eight points behind table-topping Plateau United as the league moves to match day 27, the former Wikki Tourists handler feels his side has the ability to pip their rivals to top spot in the league.
“The ambition is to win the title for the first time with Akwa United,” Maikaba said.
He drew comparison with what happened in the 2015/2016 Season.
“At this time last season, Wikki Tourists were leading Enugu Rangers by six points, and at the end, Rangers won the trophy.
“Akwa United are eight points behind Plateau United and we have an outstanding game at home. We can cover the eight points in three games and our job is to continue winning home and away.
“So, I believe it can happen this season.”
The fourth placed Akwa United will move to third if they beat third-placed Enyimba at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Sunday.
Akwa United, who were founded in 1996 have never won the NPFL crown.
