Rivers United on Saturday wiped off the bitter memory of their elimination from the CAF Champions League by Al Merreikh of Sudan as they this time were able to hold on to their goal advantage from first leg encounter.

The Nigerian side played out a goalless draw with hosts, Rayon Sports of Rwanda to advance 2-0 on aggregate to the group stage of the competition. The first leg ended 2-0.

Rivers United were reduced to 10 men in the 58th minute when Ifeanyi Nweke was given a red card. It is a sharp departure to their performance in the Champions League when they defeated El Al Merreikh 3-0 in Port Harcourt only to lose 0-4 in Sudan.
