Rivers United have suffered the same fate in the CAF Champions League almost in similar fashion of PSG in the UEFA Champions League. The Nigerian side threw away a first leg three goal advantage and crumbled miserably 0-4 to their hosts, Al Merriekh of Sudan in the return leg of the round of 32 encounter.
It was pathetic sight as the Nigerian side appeared to have merely gone to Sudan with a defensive strategy. Playing before a capacity crowd, the hosts did not waste much time before launching their path to victory.
In the ninth minute, Bakri Al Madina opened scoring, the first of the three he scored in the 4-0 demolition of the Nigerian side.
Barely 15 minutes later, Bakri Al Madina doubled the lead. By half time, the three goals that Rivers United had in Port Harcourt had been wiped off. The Sudanese scored the fourth goal midway in the second half to advance 4-3 on aggregate.
The pathetic Nigerian side have now dropped into the second-tier continental championship, the CAF Confederation Cup where they will engage in the play-off round.
