  1. U-20 AFCON was formally known as African Youth Championship or Africa U-20 Championship
  2. 1979: U-20 AFCON was founded
  3. 1979 to 1989: The tournament was played on home and away matches to determine the African champions
  4. 1991: CAF introduced a final tournament system played by 8 teams and hosted by a chosen country.
  5. 2015: CAF changed the name to U-20 AFCON
  6. Algeria: The first U-20 champion in 1979
  7. Nigeria: The most successful U-20 AFCON team with 7 titles out of 9 finals
  8. Egypt, Ghana and Cameroon have played five finals each and winning 4, 3 and 1 titles respectively
  9. Algeria, Angola, Congo and Morocco have played in the final once and won the title in each of those occasions.
  10. Cote d’Ivoire: The only country to have played in the final 3 times without winning the title.
  11. Burundi, Guinea, Mali, Senegal, South Africa, Togo and Tunisia: Each of them have played in the final once without winning the title
  12. 1995: Cameroon 4-0 defeat of Burundi is the highest recorded winning score difference in the history of U-20 AFCON final match.
  13. Egypt: The only country to have participated in 17 out of 20 CAF U-20 AFCON (2017 inclusive). Nigeria 16, Cameroon 15, Ghana 13, Mali 12, Cote d’Ivoire 11 and Morocco 10. Others are below 10.
