Bobby Clement gave the Flying Antelopes, Enugu Rangers, a flying start in the CAF Champions League Friday night wiping off the bitter memories of the mid 1970s when Algerian soil used to be the burial ground of the Nigerian Club’s continental dreams.
The 38th minute strike by Clement enabled the Nigerian league champions drew level at 1-1 against all odds in the first leg encounter with JS Saoura. The hosts, expectedly backed by a vociferous crowd, shot ahead in the 32nd minute before Rangers drew level and held on tenaciously to the advantage the score line offered them.
The return leg holds next weekend in Enugu where the Nigerian champions are expected to fire full cylinder to advance to the next stage.
The last time a Nigerian club side won the CAF Champions League was in 2004 in the glorious era of Enyimba.
